Pocket PC

The PocketPC device represents Microsoft's Handheld computing strategy. It evolved from Microsoft's embedded product, WinCE, and the first PocketPC devices were popularised by Compaq and HP with the Ipaq and Jornado respectively. These were pen based devices, which were able to synchronise data with a cable connection to a desktop PC.

Microsoft then extended these devices by the addition of a telephony software stack to produce a wireless connected device which could serve as a phone and a mobile computing platform. These devices were quickly adopted by the mobile operators who produced branded PocketPC's such as the XDA from O2 in the UK.

The devices are typically manufactured in the far east by ODM's such as HTC and have evolved to offer a more compact form and also a keyboard equipped range.

The Microsoft operating system became known as Windows Mobile and is available in Pocket PC edition and Smartphone edition, the latter providing an interface used in conventional mobile phone form factors.

Microsft's Windows Mobile integrates with it's .NET strategy which provides a common runtime and development environment across device types. The implementation of .NET in Pocket PC is termed Compact Framework. This provides a reduced set of .NET classes aimed at application development on mobile devices.
